A Fall Proposal in Shinjuku Gyoen: Captured in Photo and Video
Japan is known for its ever changing natural scenery, offering something beautiful to experience in every season. From soft spring tones to the warm colours of autumn, many visitors make time to explore parks during their trip to the country. These settings often become the perfect backdrop for meaningful milestones.
Daniel, an engineering manager visiting Tokyo, reached out while planning to propose to his girlfriend, Liv. Since their trip was scheduled for late November, he hoped to find a scenic location where autumn colors might still be visible. After discussing several options, he chose Shinjuku Gyoen and added a static video to accompany the photo coverage of the proposal.
Shinjuku Gyoen is one of Tokyo’s most popular parks and a favorite location for proposals. Located just a short walk from Shinjuku Station, it offers a peaceful escape within the city. To avoid crowds and make the most of the quiet atmosphere, Daniel decided on an early morning visit, which also helped them adjust after their flight.
Because the proposal was a surprise, we carefully planned the logistics in advance. On the day itself, I blended in as a fellow park visitor while sending Daniel reference photos to guide him to the chosen spot. The plan came together smoothly, allowing me to capture the moment discreetly in both photo and video.
We were greeted with warm autumn tones that morning, which made a beautiful setting for portraits after the proposal. We spent time around Momijiyama, known for its maple trees, and took full advantage of the seasonal colors while documenting their newly engaged moment.
The photos turned out beautifully, capturing their love seamlessly against the surrounding nature. Moments like these are always a joy to document, and they remind me why I love what I do, even if it means waking up very early to make a shoot happen.
