A Photographer’s Guide to Kawaguchiko for First-Time Visitors
If you’re visiting Japan for the first time and want to capture the perfect Mount Fuji photoshoot, Kawaguchiko is the place to be.
This guide will walk you through everything first-time visitors need to know, from getting there to avoiding crowds and making the most of your trip.
Where Is Kawaguchiko?
Nestled at the foot of Japan’s iconic Mount Fuji, Kawaguchiko is a charming lakeside town and one of the Fuji Five Lakes. It serves as a popular base for visitors hoping to see the mountain up close. With its calm waters, open landscapes, and easy access from Tokyo, Kawaguchiko has become a favorite spot for photoshoots.
How to Get There
There are 3 main ways to travel from Tokyo to Kawaguchiko: by car, bus, or train.
Driving is often the fastest and most flexible option, taking around 1 hour and 30 minutes, depending on traffic. It is especially convenient for early mornings and visiting multiple locations.
By bus, the journey takes about 1 hour and 45 minutes. Direct buses depart from Shinjuku Expressway Bus Terminal and arrive at Kawaguchiko Station. Services typically start as early as 6 am and run until around 10 pm.
Traveling by train takes roughly 2 hours. Direct trains depart from Shinjuku Station to Kawaguchiko Station every few hours, starting from around 6 am, with the last service departing at approximately 10 pm.
How to Avoid Crowds & Where to Stay
Because Kawaguchiko is a well-known destination, crowds usually start to build by mid-morning. To enjoy a calmer photoshoot experience, I highly recommend staying overnight in the area. Booking a nearby hotel allows you to start early in the morning, when the light is softer and the lake is quieter. You can check my previous blog for hotel recommendations near Kawaguchiko.
What’s the Best Time to Visit?
The best time to visit Kawaguchiko depends on the experience you are looking for. Japan has four distinct seasons, so planning your trip ahead helps with both comfort and visibility of Mount Fuji.
Winter, from November to February, often offers the clearest views of Mount Fuji, with the added beauty of snow on the mountain. It is also a quieter season with fewer tourists.
Spring, from March to May, is known for cherry blossoms around the lake, creating a romantic setting. However, it is also one of the busiest times of year.
Summer, from June to August, is cooler in Kawaguchiko compared to Tokyo and features lush greenery. This season has a higher chance of clouds and rain, which can sometimes hide the view of Mount Fuji.
Autumn, from October to November, brings beautiful fall foliage and crisp air. It is a popular season, so expect more visitors during peak foliage periods.
