A Surprise Proposal in Hakone: Onshi Hakone Park in Autumn
Onshi Hakone Park sits on a hillside above Lake Ashi, with paths that wind through open grounds before giving way to one of the most iconic views in the Hakone region. In autumn, the first colors beginning to turn in the trees around the park. It's the kind of place that makes a proposal feel inevitable.
Jesus had been with Julia for over five years. He already knew the spot. He just needed someone to be there when he asked the question
The planning
The one thing to plan carefully around is the crowds. Hakone is a popular day-trip destination from Tokyo, and the first wave of visitors tends to arrive late morning. I suggested an 11:00 AM start time as the sweet spot, early enough to get ahead of the busiest period, late enough for the morning light to have settled into something warm and directional. Jesus was happy with that, and we built the session around it.
My colleague Tah Kitti was on the ground for the shoot. We set up a WhatsApp group ahead of time so everyone could stay coordinated on the day so we could spot each other easily, and so the approach to the park felt natural and unplanned from Julia's perspective. The logistics of a surprise proposal are in the details like this, and getting them right is what lets the moment breathe when it finally arrives.
The perfect moment
Tah was in position when Jesus and Julia arrived at the park. The autumn air in Hakone had that particular crispness you only get when the season is just starting to turn - cool enough to be comfortable, with the first hints of color beginning to appear in the trees around the park.
Julia had no idea. Five years together, and she still didn't see it coming. When Jesus chose his moment by the lake, with the torii gates and the mountain as the backdrop, everything fell into place exactly as he had hoped.
After giving them a few minutes to themselves, they moved through the rest of the session together. The park offered plenty to work with within the single location — the lake views, the garden paths, the quieter corners of the grounds away from the main viewpoints. The autumn setting gave every frame a warmth and softness that the summer months simply don't offer.
There's something about that season in Hakone that makes every picture look as if it were carefully considered, even the ones that weren't.
What stays with me about shoots like this one is the weight of what's already there before the camera even comes out. Five years of a relationship, building toward a single morning in a park in Japan. The location, the season, the light; they all contributed. But the story was already theirs long before any of it.
This shoot was captured last year, and looking back at the images from that autumn morning at Onshi Park, they still hold up exactly as the best moments do.
