Best Places to Visit (and Photograph!) Around Hakone
If you're planning a day trip or short getaway from Tokyo, Hakone is one of the most beautiful destinations in Japan. Whether you're visiting for the views, the onsen, or a photoshoot, this mountainous region offers nature, culture, and postcard-perfect scenery all within 1.5 to 2 hours of the city.
As a photographer working across Tokyo, Mt. Fuji, and the surrounding areas, I often recommend Hakone to couples looking for a mix of serenity, iconic backdrops, and seasonal beauty. Below, you'll find some of the best spots to visit around Hakone, along with travel tips and ideal locations for photoshoots.
How to Get from Tokyo to Hakone
Train (most popular)
Take the Odakyu Romancecar from Shinjuku Station to Hakone-Yumoto Station (about 1.5 hours).
Or take the JR Tokaido Shinkansen to Odawara Station (35 min), then transfer to the local Hakone Tozan Railway (15 min).Car (private transport or rental)
About 2 hours depending on traffic. This is the best option if you plan to visit multiple locations or book a photoshoot.
Top Scenic Spots in Hakone
1. Hakone Shrine (箱根神社)
This lakeside shrine is one of the most iconic stops in Hakone. Nestled at the edge of Lake Ashi with a bright red torii gate rising from the water, it’s a powerful, peaceful place to propose or take portraits, especially in the morning when the crowds are light and the mist adds a dreamlike atmosphere.
2. Onshi Hakone Park
A short walk from the Hakone Shrine, this former imperial villa-turned-park offers sweeping lake views, quiet forest paths, and seasonal flowers. It’s one of our favorite spots for a more relaxed, natural shoot.
3. Choanji Temple
Located deeper into the forest, Choanji is best known for its moss-covered Buddhist statues scattered across the temple grounds. With fewer crowds and unique textures, it’s a hidden gem for quiet, spiritual portraits.
4. Sengokuhara Pampas Grass Field
Come autumn, this grass field turns golden and sways dramatically in the breeze. It's perfect for romantic shots with soft afternoon light, and also great for nature walks and drone views.
5. Hakone Open-Air Museum
This outdoor museum blends art and nature, featuring sculptures by both Japanese and international artists with a backdrop of rolling hills. It’s creative, fun, and makes for playful couple or family portraits with a twist.
More Beautiful Spots Around Hakone
A peaceful boat ride across the lake offers panoramic views of Mt. Fuji on clear days. You can board the “pirate ship” cruise or take a quieter ride for a relaxing break between photo sessions.
If you're up for a more dramatic landscape, head to Owakudani. This active geothermal area is famous for its black eggs and steaming vents. It’s otherworldly—and very different from the lush greens and lakeside serenity elsewhere in Hakone.
These charming hot spring towns offer vintage architecture, quaint cafés, and local ryokan. The area is full of character and perfect for slow, candid shots if you want a more lifestyle vibe.
Bonus: Can You Visit Hakone & Kawaguchiko in One Trip?
While Hakone and Kawaguchiko are both near Mt. Fuji, they’re not directly connected. If you're coming from Tokyo to Kawaguchiko, it typically takes 2.5 hours by train or bus. Doing both Hakone and Kawaguchiko on the same day is possible with a private car, but ideally, you'd dedicate one full day to each to enjoy them fully.
