Eloping in Japan: A Guide to Intimate Weddings and Scenic Locations

Eloping is a meaningful way to get married without the pressure of planning a large wedding. Whether you’re working with a set budget or planning something more refined, an elopement lets you focus on what truly matters: the two of you, the moment, and the place where you say your vows.

Japan is a popular choice for elopements because of its natural beauty, rich culture, and peaceful atmosphere. If you’re planning to elope here, read along this blog for guidance and inspiration.

How I Help You Plan Your Japan Elopement

I’ve been a photographer in Japan for over 10 years, with experience helping couples plan intimate elopements. I can assist with location selection, timelines, and coordinating vendors like hair and makeup artists, making the process feel simple and stress-free.

Couples can choose between public locations, such as lakes, parks, forests, or coastal areas, and private venues like ryokans, villas, or dedicated ceremony spaces. I help with selecting both, depending on the atmosphere you’re looking for. If you’d like an officiant, that is also something that can potentially be arranged.

For more elaborate elopements, I work with trusted partner planners in Japan to support venues, florals, permits, and ceremony setup.

To begin, I’ll ask about your budget and preferred locations so I can share tailored recommendations that fit your vision.

Location Ideas for Your Japan Elopement

If you’re planning from abroad, here are a few locations that work especially well for elopements:

Kawaguchiko and Yamanakako
These lakes near Mount Fuji are ideal for couples who want iconic views in a peaceful setting.

Kawaguchiko is known for its reflections of Mount Fuji, cherry blossoms in spring, and autumn foliage.
Yamanakako offers a quieter and more open feel, with wide lakeside views and fewer crowds.

Hakone
Hakone is known for its misty mountains, forests, and hot springs. It’s a great choice for couples who want a mix of tradition and comfort. Scenic roads, art installations, and occasional Mount Fuji views provide variety, while staying in a ryokan (traditional Japanese inn) with a private onsen (hot spring) makes the experience feel like a retreat.

Shirahama and Matsuzaki, Izu Peninsula
For a coastal elopement, Shirahama and Matsuzaki offer white sand beaches, rugged cliffs, and dramatic ocean views.

Shirahama is perfect for a relaxed beachside ceremony, while Matsuzaki provides a more raw and cinematic setting with rocky coastlines and hidden coves.

Depending on the season, cherry blossoms may also be possible here.

Planning an Elopement from Afar

Once you’ve chosen a location, I’ll send you my available packages, suggested venues, and a tentative schedule for the day. From there, we can refine the details together.

You can also share your preferences for flowers, as well as hair and makeup inspiration, so everything feels aligned to your vision.

If you’re dreaming of an elopement in Japan that feels personal and is exactly the way you want it to be, I’d be happy to help bring it to life.
