From Sunset to City Lights: The Olivia & Davis Proposal Under Tokyo Tower

The first thing Davis mentioned when he reached out was Tokyo Tower. He had never been to Japan before, and like a lot of first-time visitors, the tower had taken up a specific place in his imagination long before the trip was booked. He wanted it in the background when he proposed to Olivia. He wanted the lights and the unmistakable silhouette against the evening sky. He also wanted it on film.

From Georgia, planning his first trip to Japan, with his family along for the ride, Davis had thought about this one carefully.

Planning the evening around the tower

Shiba Prince Park and Tokyo Tower

We put together an evening that moved in two acts. The first at Shiba Prince Park as the sun went down, with Tokyo Tower rising over the trees behind them. The second in Yurakucho, once the city lights came fully on, with the neon and street atmosphere giving the session a completely different energy for the second half of the night. Starting earlier in the evening at Shiba Prince Park gave us the golden hour light first, warm, soft, and flattering in a way that the harsh midday or the flat artificial lighting of full night simply cannot match. As the sun dropped and the tower began to illuminate, we had a natural transition point from one mood to the next.

For this session, Davis chose the full cinematic experience package, our complete version of the proposal captured from every angle. I handled the video myself, with my colleague Alejandra Acosta taking care of the photography. Working as a team on a session like this means nothing gets missed. He also arranged a custom flower bouquet through our partner florist for the occasion. A custom bouquet is one of those details that elevates the moment without overcomplicating it.

There was one more layer to coordinate: the family. Davis and Olivia were not traveling alone. A large group of family members had made the trip with them, adding their own warmth to the occasion and logistical considerations. We accounted for the group size in the planning and made sure the evening flowed smoothly for everyone, not just the two of them.

Shiba Prince Park at golden hour

As usual, I always arrive ahead of the group to get set up and make sure everything is in position before they arrive. Shiba Prince Park in the early evening has a particular quality to it — the park sits quietly in the shadow of Tokyo Tower, with the structure visible through the trees and above the roofline, and as the light changes through the evening, so does the mood of every shot.

When Davis and Olivia arrived with their family, the light was exactly where we needed it to be. Olivia had no idea what was coming. Davis guided her to the right spot with the tower behind them, and when he turned to face her and brought out the bouquet, the park held everything still for a moment.

Olivia said yes.

The family was close by, and the reaction rippled outward from the two of them, as it does when the people you love most are standing right there when it happens.

After giving them time to take it in, we moved through the wider session at Shiba Park, the tower from different angles, the surrounding paths, the evening light doing what it does best in that last stretch before dark.

A night worth every bit of planning

Once the golden hour had given way to night, we drove the group from Shiba Park to Yurakucho for the second location. The shift in energy between the two is significant and intentional. Where Shiba Park is green, open, and framed by one of the city's most iconic landmarks, Yurakucho has a mood that feels cinematic without trying to be.

We worked through the streets together, the family joined in for parts of it, and the evening took on a celebratory feeling that carried through to the end of the session.

A first trip to Japan, done the right way.

Congratulations, Olivia and Davis! The tower was everything you hoped it would be.
