Planning a Photoshoot in Japan’s Autumn: What to Know Before You Book
Autumn might be one of the most magical times for a shoot. From golden ginkgo leaves to vibrant red maples, fall colors wrap the landscape in warmth and romance.
If you're thinking about booking a session during this season, here’s what you need to know to make the most of your autumn shoot in Japan.
When Is Autumn in Japan?
Peak foliage typically runs from late October to early December, depending on where you are.
Hokkaido: Late September to mid-October
Tohoku Region: Early to late October
Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka: Mid-November to early December
Fujikawaguchiko / Mt. Fuji Area: Early to mid-November
Mid-November is usually the safest bet if you’re aiming for iconic fall color in Tokyo or Mt. Fuji areas.
What Makes Autumn Shoots So Special?
Rich Colors: Unlike the soft pastel tones of spring, autumn gives you fiery reds, deep golds, and vibrant oranges.
Perfect Weather: Cool, crisp air without the humidity of summer.
Golden Light: The sun sets earlier, which means soft, dreamy light in the afternoon.
Recommended Autumn Locations 🍂
Depending on your preferred vibe, here are a few top spots:
📍 Fujikawaguchiko
Autumn leaves + Mount Fuji in the background = pure magic. There's also the annual Momiji Festival with trees lit up at night for a romantic feel.
📍 Tokyo
Meiji Jingu Gaien: Famous for its ginkgo-lined avenue.
Shinjuku Gyoen: A great blend of Japanese and Western garden styles.
Koishikawa Korakuen: Classic Japanese garden with beautiful maple trees.
📍Kyoto
Tofukuji Temple: One of the most photogenic maple spots in the country.
Arashiyama: You get river views, forested hills, and fall colors all in one.
What to Wear for Your Autumn Shoot 🍁
Layering is key! Go for:
Warm neutrals (cream, camel, burgundy, olive)
Textures like knit, suede, and wool
Long skirts or dresses with movement
Earth-toned coats or shawls that can be styled into the look
Timing Tips for the Best Light
Morning (7–9 AM): Soft light, fewer people, crisp feel
Golden Hour (3–5 PM): Warm, flattering tones and romantic shadows
Weekdays are better than weekends to avoid crowds, especially in popular leaf-peeping areas.
Things to Keep in Mind
🍂 Book early — Autumn is peak photoshoot season in Japan. Dates fill quickly.
📍 Some gardens require permits or fees — I’ll help you navigate that.
🚗 Transportation — Many autumn spots are just outside the city. I can help arrange travel or drive you myself if needed.
