September in Tokyo, Japan: The Katarina and Daniel Proposal Story

Daniel had chosen the date deliberately, drawn to the sequence of nines the way people are sometimes drawn to numbers that feel like they mean something. Four days in Japan as part of a two-week trip across Asia with his girlfriend Katarina, and this particular morning had been circled in his mind long before the flights were booked.
Some proposals are built around a location. This one was built around a moment in time, and the location had to live up to it.
Planning for a Tokyo morning
Daniel came to the planning process from Miami, originally from Colombia, with the kind of calm certainty that makes the coordination side of things straightforward. He knew what he wanted, was open to guidance on where to go, and had one practical concern worth addressing early: the weather.
September in Tokyo sits at the tail end of typhoon season, and the possibility of rain on a specific, unmovable date is something worth planning around rather than hoping away. I walked him through the approach: the photography team monitors conditions in advance and keeps clients informed as the date approaches. For light rain, transparent umbrellas are the answer. They are available at any convenience store in Japan, they keep the couple dry without blocking the frame, and they add their own atmosphere to the pictures. If the weather turns severe, we work together to find an alternative.
With that settled, Daniel asked about adding a second location after the proposal for additional portraits. I suggested Nezu Shrine: a quieter, less-visited shrine in the historic Yanesen neighborhood, with traditional architecture and a series of torii gates that offer a completely different aesthetic from most Tokyo locations. Around 30 minutes on foot or 15 to 20 minutes by train from the proposal spot, it made sense as a second stop within a two-hour session. Once the surprise element of the morning was over, the timing pressure eased, and Nezu could be explored at a relaxed pace without requiring the very early arrival that a proposal there would have.
The morning of September 9th at Rikugien Gardens
My colleague Tah Kitti was on the ground for the session. The date held, the morning arrived, and Katarina had no idea that the day had been chosen for a reason beyond sightseeing.
When the moment came, it was everything Daniel had planned for. Katarina's reaction was genuine, warm, and completely unguarded. The kind of response that needs no direction and no prompting, because the feeling is simply already there.
After giving them time to be together, Tah moved through the rest of the session with them, keeping the energy relaxed and the pace unhurried. Daniel and Katarina were both comfortable in front of the camera, which made the transition from proposal moment to portrait session feel natural rather than abrupt.
The second stop at Nezu Shrine
From the Rikugien, they made their way to Nezu Shrine for the second half of the morning.
The shrine sits quietly in one of Tokyo's oldest and most atmospheric neighborhoods, and at that hour it had the kind of stillness that makes it feel like a different city entirely. The torii gates, the traditional architecture, the soft light filtering through the trees: they gave the session a second visual language that stood in contrast to where the morning had started.
Two hours, two locations, and one very deliberately chosen morning. By the time they left Nezu, Daniel and Katarina were engaged, and Tokyo had given them exactly what they had asked for.
