Where the Ocean Meets the Torii Gate: The Diana & Sean Proposal
Sean and Diana were not first-time visitors to Japan. By the time Sean reached out, this was already their third trip to the country, which meant he knew what he were looking for and had a sense of what the more well-known locations looked and felt like. Sean wanted something different for this one. Something that matched the moment's significance without putting them in the middle of a crowd.
They were heading to both Okinawa and Fukuoka, and the proposal could happen at either stop. That gave us options worth thinking through carefully.
Finding the right location
Sean and I talked through several possibilities across both destinations. In Okinawa, I recommended Nagama Beach in the northern part of the island: an intimate, largely undiscovered stretch of coastline with beautiful rock formations, minimal crowds, and a sunset position that would put the light directly behind the couple. Heart Rock nearby could also serve as an additional photo spot if they wanted to extend the session. The drive from Naha takes about an hour to an hour and a half, or about 30 minutes from the town of Onna, so having a car is essential for comfortable access.
Sean had also come across Sakurai Futamigaura in Fukuoka and asked about it. I confirmed it as a strong location: a dramatic stretch of coastline with sea stacks rising from the water and a torii gate at the shoreline, the kind of scenery hard to find anywhere else in Japan. The one thing worth knowing is that it sits about an hour and a half from central Fukuoka and draws visitors as the day progresses. Going early is the right move.
We chose Sakurai Futamigaura and set off at 7:00 AM — the right call on both counts.
Before the crowds, before the heat
I arrived at Sakurai Futamigaura ahead of Sean and Diana to set up and walk the location. At that hour, the coastline was quiet. The sea stacks and the torii gate caught the early morning light in a way that only happens at that time of day, and there was barely anyone else around.
Sean had also arranged flowers for the occasion, which he brought out at the right moment to add another layer to the proposal. A small addition, but one that landed exactly the way those things do when the rest of the setting is already doing its part.
The most romantic beach proposal
When Diana arrived at the shoreline and saw what was unfolding, she had no idea it was coming. The coastline, the light, the sea stacks behind them, the torii gate nearby, and Sean with the flowers. I captured everything from a fixed position while I covered the wider angles around it.
She said yes.
After giving them time together, we moved through the session with the coastline and its surroundings as the backdrop. The early morning light at Sakurai Futamigaura at that hour is remarkable, we made the most of every minute of it.
After the Proposal: Shiraito Waterfalls
The morning did not end at the coastline. Afterward, we made our way to Shiraito Waterfalls, a stunning natural spot where water cascades in thin, curtain-like sheets across a wide stretch of rock. The contrast between the open ocean energy of the proposal location and the enclosed, lush atmosphere of the waterfalls gave the wider session a range that made the gallery feel complete. It was a beautiful way to extend the morning and let them ease into being engaged somewhere equally worth seeing.
By the time the day was done, Sean and Diana had started their third trip to Japan in the most memorable way possible.
