Your Guide to Photo Sessions During Japan's June-July Rainy Season
Planning any photo session during Japan's rainy season might seem inefficient, but after over a decade of shooting in Japan, I've discovered that some of the most stunning and memorable images happen when the weather takes an unexpected turn.
Japan's rainy season, or tsuyu, typically runs from June through July. During these months, there's a higher chance of rain, but here's what I've learned: we can still capture absolutely beautiful photos, whether you're planning a solo portrait session, a family shoot, or your couple's session in Japan.
For couples, rain adds an extra layer of intimacy to your session. There's something undeniably romantic about sharing an umbrella, the way you naturally draw closer together, and those spontaneous moments of laughter when a sudden shower catches you off guard. These unscripted reactions often become the most treasured images in your gallery.
For individual sessions, rain creates unique storytelling opportunities. The delight in puddles, the cozy feeling of rain, or the dramatic portraits we can capture with rain-kissed windows as backdrops.
If you're open to embracing whatever the weather gives us, I recommend bringing a transparent umbrella. The transparency means we don't lose any of that precious natural light that makes your images glow.
Don't have one? I can arrange to bring transparent umbrellas for our session! Just mention it when planning your shoot, and I'll make sure we're fully prepared.
Some of my most beloved portfolio pieces were captured during these unexpected rainy moments. The rainy season also brings unexpected benefits. This season often leads to more relaxed, authentic moments.
