A Fairytale Proposal at Japan’s Famous Rose Garden

Roses mean different things to different people. Some see them as a symbol of beauty despite the thorns, others focus on their colors, and many simply associate them with romance and fairytales. Whatever the interpretation, one thing is certain: almost everyone agrees they’re beautiful.

My client, Ashley, was obsessed with roses, and her boyfriend Norman knew it. He reached out to me to plan a surprise proposal at Keisei Rose Garden in Chiba, a large rose-themed park known for its stunning displays.

The garden features more than 1,600 varieties and around 10,000 rose bushes, with different flowers blooming throughout the year. For Ashley, it was essentially “Disneyland for rose lovers.”

Since Norman was already set on the location, we focused on the logistics and the surprise itself. The garden was about an hour from where they were staying, so he planned for them to leave around 8:00 a.m. to make it to the 9:15 a.m. shoot.

We chose an early time slot to avoid crowds and have plenty of flexibility in choosing the best spots. To make the plan believable, Norman told Ashley to dress up because they were supposedly heading to a Michelin-star restaurant afterward.

I wasn’t there on the day itself, but my associate, Aleandra Acosta, stepped in to photograph the proposal. After discussing the plan beforehand, all that was left was for everything to fall into place.

Despite Norman's nerves, the surprise went exactly as hoped, and Ashley never suspected a thing.

When he finally got down on one knee, Ashley had no idea what was coming. She was surprised, emotional, and more than happy to say yes among thousands of roses. Norman, who had been carrying the nerves all morning, was finally able to relax and enjoy the moment.

As they continued with the photoshoot, Aleandra noticed how naturally sweet the two of them were together, especially the way Norman looked after Ashley throughout the day.

In the end, we captured a beautiful “yes” surrounded by the blooming elegance of Keisei Rose Garden. From the quiet anticipation beforehand to the joyful surprise itself, it became a proposal filled with love, happiness, and memories they’ll be able to look back on for years to come.
