How We Planned a Spring-Inspired Proposal in Hokkaido After Cherry Blossom Season

Planning a trip takes time, effort, and careful consideration. To make the most of a well-deserved vacation, most people research destinations, seasonal highlights, and the best places to visit. Japan is often associated with spring cherry blossoms, but not everyone is able to travel during peak bloom season.

In this case, we were still able to recreate that spring atmosphere for my clients, even after the peak season had passed.

Yi Wong reached out to plan a surprise engagement proposal for his girlfriend, Nikita. The high school sweethearts were traveling to Kutchan, a resort town in Hokkaido near Mount Yotei. This inactive volcano is one of the region’s most iconic landmarks and a popular backdrop for outdoor experiences.

Kutchan also offers that “cherry blossom vibe” even outside of peak season, depending on timing and conditions, which made it a fitting choice for their spring-inspired proposal.

Since they were coming all the way from Hong Kong, Yi Wong needed support in planning, especially with concerns about Mount Yotei’s visibility. I helped coordinate the timing and location to give them the best possible chance of capturing both the mountain and shibazakura fields together, creating the spring-inspired atmosphere he envisioned. We also factored in their onward travel to Otaru, lighting conditions, and other key details to ensure everything aligned smoothly.

After finalizing the plan, my associate Leena handled the shoot, including photography and a static video. She arrived 30 minutes early to scout the area and identify the best angle with the mountain backdrop. The exact location and reference photos were then shared with Yi Wong so everything was clear before the proposal.

On the day itself, everything came together beautifully. The proposal still carried a soft spring feel despite the timing, with Mount Yotei and the flower fields framing the moment perfectly. The couple were incredibly sweet with each other throughout the shoot, simply taking in the moment as newly engaged partners.

It was another meaningful moment captured by our team, and we’re always grateful to help bring our clients’ vision to life. If you’re planning your own proposal in Japan, feel free to check out our packages below and let’s start planning your moment together.
