A New Take on the Classic Mount Fuji Proposal: Planning Something More Creative
When you look up proposals in Japan online, you will often see Mount Fuji in the background. As someone who has been working in this industry for a long time, I completely understand why. The perfect cone of the country’s tallest peak is truly iconic. It is widely considered one of Japan’s most important natural, cultural, and spiritual symbol. Naturally, many couples visiting the country want to have Fuji-san behind them to mark such an important moment.
Sean wanted the same for his proposal to his girlfriend, Xin Yuan. However, many of his friends had already done similar proposals, and his girlfriend is someone who appreciates unique surprises.
He was looking for a location that felt different, away from popular spots like Oishi Park. I understood the need for something more personal, so I suggested a few alternative locations within the Kawaguchiko area.
We eventually decided on Tenku no Torii, also known as the Torii Gate in the Sky. It combines cultural significance with a beautiful view of Mount Fuji. The red torii gate, which holds meaning in Shinto beliefs, sits on the mountainside and offers a more unique perspective of the landscape.
One thing about our team is that we like to be prepared. Once the location was confirmed, we secured the necessary permits and arranged everything from transportation to Sean’s special request.
He wanted to include a custom stamp with the message “Will you marry me?” to make the proposal more personal. So our team designed and produced the stamp specifically for this moment.
We had originally arranged the permit for a certain date, but had to move it due to bad weather the day before. Since we coordinated closely with the location, they were able to open earlier than usual so the couple could have the space to themselves.
My associate Alejandra Acosta was there to photograph everything. We brought a small table along with the custom stamp, and made sure everything was set up before they arrived. All they had to do was show up and enjoy the moment.
Xin Yuan’s face lit up the moment the surprise unfolded. It was intimate, thoughtful, and different from the usual proposal setups.
Afterward, we brought them to the lake for additional photos. They were very happy with the previews they received on the same day, and the full set was delivered within three days.
