Catching Early Cherry Blossoms in a Tokyo Proposal

Not everyone catches cherry blossom season at its peak, but that doesn’t mean you miss it entirely. In places like Shinjuku Gyoen, early blooming trees start to appear even before the main season, offering a quieter and more subtle version of sakura in Tokyo.

My clients Ross and Citlali happened to be in Tokyo just in time for these early blooms. Traveling from the United States for a five day trip, they had a tight schedule to work around.

I was connected with Ross through a referral from a previous couple who had a photoshoot with me. They loved their photos so much that he wanted something similar, and reached out for help with planning his proposal.

Citlali was running the Tokyo Marathon on March 1, so Ross planned to propose the following day. He shared that they would be staying in the Asakusa area and preferred a location within a 30 minute travel radius. He described them as low maintenance and mainly wanted a place with good scenery, just something natural.

Given the timing, I suggested Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden. It is a spacious park with a wide variety of cherry trees, including early bloomers that appear before peak season. We were hoping to catch these early blossoms, and it turned out to be the perfect setting for what they had in mind.

Once everything was confirmed, we finalized the plan. Since it was a surprise, my associate Alejandra Acosta posed as a tourist and only approached them after the proposal. This allowed the couple to take in the moment privately before moving into the photoshoot.

Alejandra captured everything beautifully, with soft early cherry blossoms and greenery surrounding them. The setting was simple, but it worked perfectly for what they wanted.

They shared that they had a great time, which always means a lot to hear.

If you are planning a proposal in Tokyo or anywhere in Japan, I would be happy to help you bring it together. From choosing the right location to coordinating the details, we can create something that feels natural and personal.
