A Sunset Proposal in Japan’s Seaside City
Did you know that Japan has its own version of California? About an hour south of Tokyo lies Kamakura, a relaxed seaside city known for its surf beaches, coastal atmosphere, and occasional views of Mount Fuji.
While many visitors come for the ocean and slower pace compared to Tokyo, Kamakura is also deeply rooted in culture and history, with temples, shrines, and old streets scattered throughout the city.
That’s why it didn’t surprise me when my client, Jimmy, told me he wanted to propose to his girlfriend, Nina, at Kamakura Beach. It was their first trip to Japan, and since they were staying in Tokyo, they only had time for a short day trip. He wanted a seaside proposal during sunset, which made Kamakura the perfect choice.
Kamakura Beach is a popular spot for both tourists and surfers, so I explained to him that the proposal wouldn’t be completely private. But on clear days, Mount Fuji can sometimes be seen in the distance, which adds something really special to the view.
Aside from the beach, anime fans would also recognize Kamakura from the opening sequence of Slam Dunk. The famous railway crossing near Kamakurakōkōmae Station on the Enoden Line is located nearby, making it a fun stop for visitors exploring the area. While we didn’t shoot there directly, we spent some time around the area waiting for the golden light to soften.
While we were in the area, we also wanted to take photos with the Enoden train, since it only passes around every 10 minutes. We had to carefully time these shots, moving between locations while waiting for the train and racing against the short golden hour before the light disappeared.
Finally, once the timing felt right, we headed to a quieter side of the beach. It wasn’t completely private, but it was far less crowded compared to the main areas. The wind was incredibly strong that day, which limited some of the poses we could comfortably do.
With the sound of the waves and the sunset painting the sky, Kamakura Beach became the perfect place for a beautiful “yes.”
It was a heartfelt proposal filled with love, laughter, and unforgettable seaside memories. After capturing the proposal itself, we spent more time walking around the area taking portraits, just as Jimmy had requested.
