Summer in Japan 2026: Weather, Festivals & Travel Tips
Summer is the warmest and brightest season of the year. It is when temperatures rise and vibrant landscapes come alive across the country. In Japan, summer spans from June to August, with temperatures frequently reaching above 30 degrees. If you’re planning to visit during this time, here’s everything you need to know about summertime.
June
Summer in Japan begins alongside the rainy season, which usually lasts around three to four weeks. The weather can feel humid and cloudy at times, but temperatures are generally more comfortable compared to the hotter summer months.
July and August
Peak summer brings stronger sunshine, high humidity, and temperatures that often rise above 30 degrees, with August usually being the hottest month.
Typhoon Season
Late summer can occasionally bring typhoons, which may affect transportation schedules and travel plans.
If you’re visiting Japan during the summer but prefer to avoid the strongest heat, places like the Japanese Alps, Hokkaido, and the Tohoku region are great alternatives. These areas still allow you to enjoy summer while offering a cooler climate. Since Japan stretches across a large geographical area, weather conditions can vary significantly depending on where you travel.
Despite the heat, summer remains one of the most exciting seasons to visit Japan. Visitors can enjoy local festivals, fireworks displays, nature trips, and hiking experiences throughout the country. Some popular summer events include:
Tenjin Festival, Osaka
One of Japan’s most famous festivals, the Tenjin Festival is a 1,000-year-old Shinto celebration featuring land processions, boat parades, and fireworks. It is held annually on July 24 and 25.
Nagaoka Matsuri, Niigata Prefecture
A two-day celebration held during the first week of August featuring around 20,000 fireworks.
Shinmei Fireworks Festival, Yamanashi Prefecture
Held on August 7, this event features around 20,000 fireworks synchronized with music and pyrotechnic displays near Mount Fuji.
Aomori Nebuta Festival
Held every August 2 to 7, this festival is known for its large illuminated floats moving through the streets.
Sendai Tanabata Festival
From August 6 to 8, colorful streamers decorate the streets and shopping areas of Sendai, transforming the city during the celebration.
Yamagata Hanagasa Festival
Held from August 5 to 7, this festival celebrates regional dance and music with kimono-clad dancers performing to the rhythm of taiko drums.
During summer, hydration and comfort should be your top priorities. Lightweight and breathable clothing is highly recommended.
If you’re planning a photoshoot during this season, early mornings are usually the best time to avoid the strongest heat and crowds. You can also consider locations outside of major cities for more scenic views and a more comfortable experience.

Summer in Japan may be hot, but it comes with experiences you can only enjoy during this time of year. Festival streets come alive, fireworks fill the night skies, and seasonal landscapes take on a completely different atmosphere.
