Arashiyama Bamboo Forest at Sunrise: The Sam & Rex Proposal

Rex flew in from New York to visit and finally propose to Sam in Japan.

That detail alone sets the tone for everything that follows. This was not a trip that happened to include a proposal. The proposal was the reason for the trip. Sam lives in Japan, Rex was visiting for the first time, and somewhere inside one of Kyoto's most iconic natural spaces, he was going to ask her to spend the rest of her life with him.

He reached out with exactly the kind of energy that makes this work feel worthwhile: open, grateful, and completely clear on wanting the moment to be something she would never forget.

The forest at the right hour

Arashiyama Bamboo Forest is one of those places that photographs like a dream and exists like one, too, provided you arrive at the right time. The towering green stalks, the morning light, the forest wind moving through the canopy — it is a genuinely extraordinary setting. The catch is that by mid-morning, it fills with visitors quickly, and the intimacy disappears almost entirely.

An early start was the answer. Getting into the forest before the crowds meant Rex and Sam had the kind of space and quiet the location offers only at that hour, and it gave the proposal the privacy it deserved without leaving the forest to find it.

The plan on the ground was built around staying invisible until the right moment. I moved through the forest ahead of them as an ordinary tourist: camera out, pace relaxed, nothing to suggest anything other than a visitor making the most of an early Kyoto morning.

So, we started at the bamboo forest and then ended up at the river.

Rex guided Sam through the bamboo, and when they reached the spot, he got down on one knee.

The detail that made this proposal its own: Rex stayed down a little longer than strictly required, which naturally drew the attention of nearby visitors and created a respectful space around the two of them without anyone needing to be asked. A small, thoughtful instinct that showed exactly the kind of person Rex is.

He had also prepared a handwritten letter for Sam, something personal to hold and read in the moment, a choice that replaced something else he had originally planned and turned out to be exactly right. In a forest that asks you to slow down, a handwritten letter fits.

After the ‘Yes’

Once the proposal was done and the moment had settled, we moved through the wider session together. The bamboo forest gave us the first stretch of portraits, then we worked our way through the surrounding area of Arashiyama.

The range of settings across the session meant the gallery had a variety that a single location rarely provides on its own. The forest, the old city streets, the temple architecture; each gave the pictures a different character while the thread of the morning ran through all of them.

Rex also availed of the same-day edited previews, which went out before the day was done, meaning they had finished images in hand to relive the moments.

It was a beautiful moment, and they were calling their parents about it.

Ready to propose in the Bamboo Forest?

There are easier ways to propose. There are safer choices than a bamboo forest in a city you have never visited, coordinated with a team you just met, on a timeline that does not allow for much to go wrong. Rex chose this one. It was the right call.

The coordination is simpler than it sounds when you have the right team. Get in touch and let's make your morning in the bamboo forest exactly what it should be.
