Capturing a Love Story Twenty Years in the Making in Japan
For many people, a trip to Japan is a dream they intentionally save for. This is true for Jascha and Megan, a couple who have always wanted to experience the country together. Although they are only 26 and 25, they have known each other for over 20 years, with a deep friendship that naturally grew into a three-year relationship.
Since they are traveling all the way from Australia, Jascha reached out to ask for location recommendations. He was clear about one thing: He did not want the proposal to happen in a random place. With that in mind, I suggested Rikugien Gardens, a location known for its calm atmosphere and beautiful seasonal colors. By the time of the shoot, the leaves had turned warm shades of red and yellow, creating a soft and cozy natural backdrop.
Jascha also shared that they are very private people, which made Rikugien Gardens an ideal choice. The garden is spacious and rich in nature, so we could freely explore and look for more remote locations within. I explained that it would take around 40 minutes to reach from Shibuya by train, and he was happy to make the trip, especially since the garden is open on Mondays. We decided on an afternoon shoot, and after confirming the plan, he requested a private picnic set up just for the two of them.
Jascha mentioned that they were not the type of couple to post many photos online. The images were meant for themselves, their friends, and their family. Because of that, the focus of the shoot was simply the two of them enjoying a quiet moment together, while I documented their connection quietly.
It was an honor to photograph more than two decades of friendship as it turned into a lifetime commitment. I am deeply grateful for the trust Jascha and Megan placed in me and in my work.
