Documenting Love in Hakone Shrine

While surprise proposals are the most common photoshoot requests we receive, there is something refreshing about doing a proposal session simply to honor the moment. It is a couple’s choice to intentionally make time for immortalizing a special chapter in their story.

Kai inquired about a photoshoot with his now fiancée, Heather. Since I was already booked on their preferred date, I recommended my associate, Alejandra, to cover the session. They were happy with the suggestion, and I told them that I would still be editing the photos to maintain consistency in style.

They chose the basic photo package, and we discussed the details beforehand to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience.

Kai and Heather decided on Hakone Shrine, a peaceful and historical site along the shores of Lake Ashi. The shrine is known for welcoming visitors who pray for health, transportation safety, marriage, and other wish fulfillments.

Because the area can get very crowded throughout the day, I emphasized starting between 6:30 and 7:00 am. This timing allowed them to enjoy the space quietly and capture clean, uninterrupted shots. I also recommended arranging private transportation or staying overnight in Hakone so everyone could arrive early.

Their photoshoot was a quick one-hour session, and the results turned out beautifully. We captured the iconic Torii gate, scenic lake views, charming autumn colors, and a few solo portraits for each of them. The joy of having time to prepare showed beautifully in their photos. They were prepared, which made the whole experience calm and enjoyable.

Their session was short, sweet, and filled with genuine emotion. It is a reminder that you don’t need an elaborate setup to create something truly meaningful. What matters most is the intention behind the moment and the story you want to preserve.
