Working with Nature’s Timeline: How We Timed a Proposal with Japan’s Foliage Season

Many travelers visit Japan in late November hoping to witness the beauty of autumn foliage. It is often considered the cozy season, when the air becomes crisp and trees shift into warm shades of rust red, burnt orange, yellow, olive green, and brown. The cooler weather and seasonal scenery make it a popular time to visit. And for Bryan, an autumn proposal was the dream he had always envisioned.

Planning the Perfect Timing

Since their travel dates were between November 22 and 30, Bryan and I coordinated closely with their itinerary to catch the remaining autumn colors. We scheduled the shoot based on the foliage forecast. He initially wanted to propose in Zao, but I advised him that autumn would have already ended there by those dates.

Choosing Yahiko Park

After reviewing several locations, we decided on Yahiko Park in Niigata for the surprise proposal. The park is mostly visited during autumn, when the colors are at their best. Sitting right beside Yahiko Station, it features traditional Japanese elements such as waterfalls, streams, pathways, and tunnels. It is especially known for its Maple Valley and the iconic vermilion bridge, which stand out beautifully during peak foliage.

Setting the Plan Into Motion

We scheduled a two-hour photoshoot in the park. Since I was unavailable on the chosen date, I asked my associate, Alejandra, to take over for me. Bryan agreed, and everything was set for the special moment he had been planning for months.

The Surprise Proposal

Claudia and Bryan arrived at Yahiko Park and began exploring its scenery, unaware that Alejandra was discreetly following behind to capture the moment. When the time felt right, Bryan went down on one knee and asked Claudia the question he had been waiting to ask. It was a beautiful and intimate moment. He wanted a natural backdrop filled with autumn colors, and that was exactly what we were able to capture.

A Walk Through Autumn

After the proposal, they continued walking around the park to take more photos. They visited the iconic bridge, wandered through maple-lined paths, and soaked in the vibrant colors of late autumn. The joy on their faces showed how much they loved the experience, and the photos reflected that warmth perfectly.
