From Anime Screen to Real-Life Memory: A Surprise Proposal at the Your Name Stairs
People travel to Japan for many reasons such as food, scenery, culture, shopping, and unique experiences. For Jasmine, one of her biggest wishes was to visit the iconic red-railed steps leading to Suga Shrine in Yotsuya, Tokyo. The location was featured in the anime film Kimi No Na Wa (Your Name), where the protagonists Taki and Mitsuha finally meet on those very steps. Because of this, many anime fans dream of recreating the scene when they come to Japan. Jonathon promised Jasmine that they would do a photoshoot there, but she had no idea he had something much bigger planned.
Planning the Perfect Surprise Proposal
Jonathon and I had already been coordinating the proposal details ahead of their trip to make sure everything went smoothly. He mentioned that he wanted to propose the day after they arrived, so they could spend the rest of their holiday celebrating as an engaged couple. Since he wanted photos in two locations, I shared recommendations for romantic spots near Suga Shrine that would complement their vision.
The Anime Moment Comes to Life
The stairs from Kimi No Na Wa were the obvious choice for the first location. Jasmine thought we were simply doing a regular photoshoot, so she was relaxed and enjoying the experience. With the iconic red railings behind them, Jonathon went down on one knee and asked Jasmine to marry him. In that moment, they became the main characters of the scene they had admired for so long. After the proposal, we continued capturing photos and even recreated a few of the famous shots from the movie.
For the second location, I suggested Nezu Shrine since they wanted a nature-filled setting. It was less than thirty minutes away and was perfect for the season because autumn was at its peak. I drove them to the shrine, and they immediately loved the atmosphere.
Nezu Shrine is surrounded by lush greenery, koi ponds, and a beautiful pathway framed by vermilion torii gates. As one of Tokyo’s oldest and most photogenic shrines, it blends history with stunning scenery, making it an ideal backdrop for engagement photos. We explored the grounds and took more portraits, which the newly engaged couple were delighted with.
