From First Call to Final Dance | How We Helped Breana & Matt Create Their Dream Wedding in Japan
When Breana and Matt first reached out to me on Instagram, they knew they wanted to celebrate their wedding in Japan — and like many destination couples, they wanted the right team to help make the experience feel smooth, stress-free, and unforgettable.
Their Kyoto wedding became a beautiful example of how we approach weddings in Japan: not simply capturing the day, but helping couples feel supported enough to truly enjoy every moment.
Step 1: Starting With a Real Conversation
After discovering my work on Instagram, Breana and Matt reached out because they wanted to know more about my services and what having their wedding in Japan could realistically look like. Rather than immediately jumping into pricing, we started with a real conversation.
We organized an initial call where we took the time to understand their vision, discuss the kind of wedding experience they wanted, and go through their early plans in detail. This first call allowed me to offer advice based on my years of experience photographing weddings in Japan while also helping them think through logistics they may not have initially considered.
I also shared full wedding galleries from previous weddings I had captured so they could clearly understand how I approach an entire wedding day, not just highlight moments.
This stage was about more than photography — it was about building trust, understanding their needs, and helping them feel confident about what was possible.
If you’re planning a wedding or elopement in Japan, the right photographer should help you do more than choose a package — they should help you feel informed and supported from the very beginning.
Step 2: Helping Build the Right Team
As Breana and Matt’s plans developed, my role naturally extended beyond photography itself.
Based on the experience they wanted to create, I was able to offer advice on their plans, recommend a trusted planner to help bring everything together, and also introduce them to a hair and makeup artist for the day. For destination weddings, having the right local team can make an enormous difference, and helping connect couples with trusted professionals can often remove a huge amount of stress.
Once more pieces were in place, we organized a second call to go through the final structure of the day in detail so that everyone felt aligned before moving forward.
After everything was confirmed, Breana and Matt officially reserved both photography and videography coverage, allowing us to fully document every chapter of their wedding day.
A seamless wedding experience often starts long before the wedding itself, and building the right team is a huge part of that.
Step 3: Meeting in Japan Before the Big Day
About a week before the wedding, once Breana and Matt had arrived in Japan, we arranged an in-person meeting at a café with my team.
This wasn’t simply about logistics. It was an opportunity to properly meet, confirm final details, answer last questions, and make sure everyone felt comfortable before such an important day.
We also shared local tips and recommendations so they could enjoy their time in Japan even more during their trip. By the time the wedding day arrived, we were no longer strangers showing up with cameras — we were already familiar faces they trusted.
That comfort can make a huge difference.
Step 4: Wedding Day — Full-Day Support From Beginning to End
When the wedding day finally arrived, our team’s role began well before Breana and Matt stepped into frame.
We arrived early at the venue to introduce ourselves, prepare, scout the location, and capture the atmosphere before the day fully unfolded. This included photographing the venue, gardens, and meaningful getting-ready moments while they prepared for the day ahead.
As preparations continued, we documented one of the most emotional parts of the day — their first look in kimono. This moment beautifully blended their personal love story with the cultural beauty of Japan.
From there, we moved to the temple for their Buddhist ceremony, where we captured both photography and videography throughout the experience. Because preserving emotion goes beyond visuals, we also mic’d them to ensure their vows were beautifully recorded so they could relive not only how the ceremony looked, but how it sounded and felt.
After the ceremony, we continued with portraits and videos throughout the gardens before capturing family photos.
Later, once they returned to the main venue and changed into western attire, we documented the dinner celebration, emotional interactions, speeches, and dancing that carried the experience into the evening.
From 10AM until 11PM, our team was there for every chapter.
More Than Photography — Being Part of the Experience
Throughout the day, our role was never simply to take photos. We were there to help Breana and Matt feel comfortable, supported, and fully present.
That meant helping guide them naturally, supporting communication or translation when needed, working smoothly alongside the planner and HMUA, and making sure they always felt looked after.
For destination weddings, especially in a country like Japan, this kind of support can completely transform the experience.
Our goal was simple: To not only capture their wedding beautifully, but to actively help make it the best possible experience it could be.
Final Thoughts
Breana and Matt’s Kyoto wedding was a beautiful reminder that unforgettable destination weddings are about far more than stunning locations.
They are about trust, support, and having the right team around you. From our first Instagram conversation to planning calls, trusted planner and HMUA recommendations, an in-person pre-wedding meeting, and full-day photography and videography coverage, our role was always about more than documentation.
It was about helping them feel supported enough to fully enjoy one of the most important days of their lives.
And that is exactly how we approach every wedding and elopement we capture in Japan.
