Making the Most of a Day in Tokyo: A Surprise Engagement Photoshoot
I often hear my clients say that Japan is their dream destination. People travel from all over the world for different reasons, whether it’s the food, the landscapes, the rich history, the shopping, or all of the above. The country has so much to offer, and each city has its own unique charm.
That’s why when newly engaged couple Yasmeen and Konnar had a one-day stop in Japan, they knew they had to make the most of it.
The couple was coming from Vietnam and had one full day in Tokyo on a Saturday. Konnar wanted to surprise Yasmeen with an engagement photoshoot, especially since Tokyo had always been her dream destination.
Like any other shoot, we planned everything in advance to make sure the day would run smoothly. They wanted to capture two different styles, one with a traditional garden or nature backdrop, and another with a more urban, street-style feel. They also mentioned wanting a casual shooting style, which I kept in mind throughout the planning.
Since their time was limited, we had to be intentional with every detail.
I recommended Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden for its mix of Japanese elements and natural scenery. I also let them know that the cherry blossoms would likely be gone by the time they arrived. As one of the largest parks in Tokyo, it was perfect for the first half of their shoot.
After that, we planned for street photography around Shinjuku for a more urban feel. Since they were visiting, I also guided them on which train to take so they could move between locations easily.
I wasn’t there for the shoot, but my associate, Leena Balanag, handled everything on the day. That’s one of the advantages of working with a team like ours, we’re able to cover different schedules and locations while maintaining the same approach. The photos turned out beautifully, and Yasmeen was both surprised and happy with the experience.
Showing people around the country I now call home is always something special. It’s an honor for my team and me to document moments like this, especially when it’s someone’s first time in Japan. These aren’t just photos, they’re memories they get to take home with them.
