Planning a Stress-Free Proposal at Chureito Pagoda
New York had plenty to celebrate this year. While the city was still riding the excitement of the Knicks ending their 53-year championship drought, AJ was preparing for a celebration of his own, one that would take him halfway across the world to Japan.
He wanted more than just a photographer for his proposal, he was looking for someone who could help with the logistics, recommend the right location, and make the experience as stress-free as possible.
AJ and his girlfriend, Natachia, were planning a trip to Japan to celebrate their third anniversary. Their itinerary included five days in Okinawa, followed by a few days in Tokyo and a side trip to Osaka. Somewhere along the way, he knew it was finally time to ask one life-changing question.
He knew that planning a proposal from another country isn’t easy. It involves choosing the right location, coordinating transport, handling many details, and still keeping everything a surprise. That’s why AJ reached out to us. He wanted someone who knew Japan well, could recommend the right spots, and help make the entire experience feel seamless from start to finish.
After discussing different options, we explored the Mount Fuji area. Since Kawaguchiko is about two hours from Tokyo, we went through the logistics together and considered locations that would be worth the trip.
I recommended Chureito Pagoda, one of Japan’s most iconic viewpoints overlooking Mount Fuji. Reaching the top involves climbing around 400 steps, and while the area can get quite busy during the day, an early morning visit offers a much quieter experience and the best chance to enjoy the scenery.
On the day of the proposal, AJ and Natachia made their way to Chureito Pagoda while my associate, Leena Acosta, waited nearby. He led her toward the torii gate overlooking Mount Fuji, and in that moment, he got down on one knee.
The timing couldn’t have been better. Mount Fuji appeared clearly in the background, and after Natachia said yes, people nearby began cheering and celebrating with them. It became one of those rare moments where complete strangers naturally became part of the memory.
Leena captured the proposal as it unfolded before continuing with portraits around the area, allowing the couple to fully enjoy the start of their engagement.
