Planning Your Summer Photo Session in Japan: What You Need to Know
Summer in Japan is wonderful for your photo sessions. However, there are unique considerations that can make or break your session. As someone who's been capturing love stories across Japan for over a decade, I've learned exactly what to expect during these warmer months and how to make the most of them.
The heat is real, and it's coming fast. But with the proper preparation, summer can give you some of the most stunning and culturally rich photos of your time in Japan.
Summer temperatures in Japan typically range from 25-35°C (77-95°F), with humidity levels that can make it feel even hotter. The season officially kicks off around mid-June and runs through early September.
But here's the thing—this weather creates the most incredible atmospheric conditions for photography. Those misty mornings and golden, hazy afternoons? Pure charm!
I recommend scheduling sessions either early morning (before 9 AM) or late afternoon (after 5 PM) to avoid the peak heat and harsh midday sun.
When choosing the best summer photo spots, gardens and parks become lush green sanctuaries perfect for intimate portraits. So, places like Hana no Miyako Park and Shiba Park are some of the best green backdrops that pop beautifully in photos.
Summer in Japan also brings out the beautiful tradition. Yukata are lighter, the more casual summer version of the kimono. Yukata are incredibly comfortable in the heat while adding that authentic Japanese touch to your photos.
If you're interested in including Yukata in your session, I can help arrange rentals and suggest locations where they'll look most authentic and beautiful.
For something uniquely summer photo sessions, many festival venues and areas decorated for seasonal celebrations provide colorful, culturally rich backgrounds that you simply can't get any other time of year.
From July through August, Japan comes alive with matsuri (festivals) featuring incredible lantern displays, traditional performances, and that electric energy that only Japanese festivals can deliver. We can plan your session to coincide with specific festivals that match your vision and comfort level.
