Tokyo's Autumn Season Through My Lens
As I'm organizing my files from last autumn, I can't help but smile at the incredible moments I captured across Tokyo. There's something about fall in this city that never fails to take my breath away. Maybe it's the way the golden light filters through the maple leaves, or how couples seem to glow a little brighter against those warm backdrops.
Looking through these images brings me back to those crisp moments chasing that perfect golden hour light. Each spot holds special memories, not just for the couples I photographed but for me.
Rikugien: Where Time Stands Still
Rikugien will always have a special place in my heart. This traditional Japanese garden becomes magical during autumn, like stepping into a living painting. The way the morning mist rises from the pond while the maple trees create this incredible canopy of reds and oranges above.
I remember this session where Rikugien's peaceful atmosphere melted their worries away. The garden makes everyone feel like they're the only two people in the world. And that soft, filtered light that comes through the trees? It's like nature's own professional lighting setup.
Shinjuku Gyoen: Urban Oasis in Full Glory
If Rikugien is poetry, then Shinjuku Gyoen is a love song. This massive park right in the heart of Tokyo offers so much variety.
I love shooting here in autumn because the changing leaves create these natural frames everywhere you look. The ginkgo trees turn this brilliant golden yellow that seems almost unreal in photos – in the best way possible. I've had couples tell me they felt like they were in a movie scene, and honestly, that's exactly the vibe I'm going for.
Hibiya Park: Hidden Gem in Plain Sight
Hibiya Park is probably the most underrated spot on this list, but it holds some of my favorite memories from last autumn. Located right between the Imperial Palace and Ginza, most people walk through this beautiful blend of Western and Japanese garden styles without noticing.
But during autumn? It transforms completely. I love how intimate this park feels compared to some of the bigger spots in Tokyo. It's perfect for couples who want something beautiful but not too crowded. Some of my most natural, relaxed photos from last year came from sessions here; there's just something about the scale of the place that helps people feel comfortable being themselves.
Looking back at all these images, what strikes me most isn't just how beautiful the locations are and the emotions captured in each frame. Those quiet, tender moments when they forget I'm even there.
As we prepare for another autumn season, I already feel that familiar excitement building. The leaves are just starting to change, and I'm already planning which locations will be perfect for each couple I'll work with. While these photos from last year are beautiful, the best part is that each autumn brings new stories, new moments, and new magic to capture.
Until the next golden hour,
Thierry
