When Mount Fuji Witnessed Another Yes: Erica and Lester's Surprise Proposal
When people get married, most eyes are on the bride as she walks down the aisle. But more often than not, I find myself looking at the groom’s reaction. There’s something special about seeing someone become emotional as the love of their life walks toward them.
It’s the same whenever we photograph proposals. While most people focus on the surprise and excitement on the woman’s face, I also pay attention to the man’s reaction. After all, that’s the moment when all the planning, preparation, and sneaking around finally come to life. That was especially true for my client, Lester, whose genuine reaction became one of my favorite parts of this proposal.
Lester approached me with plans to propose to Erica during their trip to Mount Fuji. He wanted recommendations for both the proposal location and a photoshoot afterward with Fuji views. We decided on Lake Kawaguchiko for the proposal itself, and I suggested heading to Nagasaki Park afterward.
Located on the north side of the lake, Nagasaki Park offers beautiful views of both Mount Fuji and the water. It’s usually less crowded than other spots in the area and provides a nice variety of scenery, with rocky beaches and natural greenery. Visitors can even interact with and feed some of the local animals.
To increase our chances of seeing Mount Fuji clearly, I recommended an early start, which Lester happily agreed to. On the day of the shoot, we arranged transportation to bring them to the proposal location, where my associate, Tah Kitti, was already waiting discreetly nearby.
Since it was a surprise, Lester shared a selfie and his live location with Tah so we could keep track of them without giving anything away.
When the timing felt right, he got down on one knee and asked the question that would change their lives forever.
The moment was heartfelt, emotional, and beautifully genuine. You can see it in the photos. With Mount Fuji standing quietly in the background, it felt like another beautiful morning witnessing two people in love. Nothing extravagant, just a sincere moment between the two of them.
After the proposal, they spent the rest of the shoot exploring the area and taking photos together before Tah dropped them off at the station.
They chose the Basic Package, which includes a one-hour photoshoot at a single location and more than 30 edited images delivered within a week. I personally handled the editing to ensure the final gallery matched the style and quality that clients see throughout my work.
Moments like these are never the result of one person alone. It takes planning, teamwork, and trust to bring everything together. But seeing a proposal unfold successfully always reminds us why we love doing what we do.
