Yeung Jek and Audrey's Perfect Beach Proposal in Okinawa

There’s something romantic about being by the ocean. The sound of the waves, sandy toes, and beautiful views of either the sunrise or sunset create a setting that already feels special on its own. Add a proposal into the mix, and it becomes a moment that’s hard to forget.

When Yeung Jek, told me he was planning to propose to his girlfriend, Audrey, during their trip to Okinawa, I knew we had plenty of beautiful options to work with.

Often referred to as the "Hawaii of Japan," Okinawa is made up of more than 150 islands known for their white sand beaches, turquoise waters, and laid-back atmosphere. Since it was their first time visiting, I shared several location ideas that matched what he was looking for.

Some of the options included Uppama Beach, known for its long stretch of natural white sand, Heart Rock, a quieter beach famous for its heart-shaped coral formation, and Swings on the Ocean, a seaside café with oceanfront swings that make for a unique backdrop.

We also explored different areas around Okinawa, and we ultimately including ultimately chose a near private beach. It offered beautiful views, a peaceful atmosphere, and was conveniently located near their hotel.

The day before the proposal, I personally visited the area to scout the location. Aside from making sure it matched Yeung Jek's vision, I also wanted to confirm how private it would be. While I was there, I looked for a second nearby location where we could continue the photoshoot afterward.

On the day itself, I arrived around 40 minutes early to prepare for both photos and videos. Since the proposal was a surprise, I also needed to find a good hiding spot where I could capture the moment without being noticed.

When the timing was right, he finally got down on one knee. Audrey was in tears almost immediately, and it was easy to see just how much the moment meant to both of them.

The beach was completely empty, and for a few minutes, it felt like they had the entire coastline to themselves. I gave them some time to enjoy the moment before we continued taking photos along the shore.

Afterward, we headed to our second location, a quiet area lined with trees that offered a completely different backdrop from the ocean. The transition gave them a nice variety of photos while still keeping the relaxed atmosphere of the day.

Everything unfolded smoothly from start to finish. Between the peaceful beach, the beautiful weather, and the genuine emotions of the moment, it became one of those proposals that reminds me why I love documenting stories like these.
