How Do You Spot Your Photographer During a Surprise Proposal?
It's one of the most common questions I get from clients planning a surprise proposal, and it's a fair one. You're at a location you may have never been to before, trying to act completely normal while looking out for someone you've never met in person.
Here's exactly how it works and why it's simpler than it sounds.
You don't need to spot me. I'll find you.
Before the shoot, we exchange everything needed to ensure the coordination is seamless — reference photos of yourself, exact location pins for where to be, and a description of what you'll be wearing on the day. I will also share a photo of myself so you know what I look like. All of this happens on WhatsApp, which I use for all real-time communication on shoot days.
How the process works
Here's a quick overview of how everything comes together from inquiry to proposal day:
Inquiry: It starts with a message. Through the website, email, or Instagram. You share the basics: where you're thinking of proposing, when you're visiting Japan, and what kind of coverage you're looking for.
Discovery Call: From there, we get on a call to talk through the details. The location, the timing, the package, and any questions you have about how the day will go. This is where we figure out what works best for your specific situation and build a plan around it.
Proposal & Quot: After the call, I'll send over a quote based on our discussion. Once that's confirmed and the deposit is in, we move into the coordination phase.
WhatsApp Group: As soon as the booking is confirmed, I create a WhatsApp group with you and anyone else involved in the coordination, including any associate photographers or videographers on the team. This is our main channel for everything from location planning to day-of updates. It keeps things fast, clear, and easy to track.
Once I'm set up, I'll stay in touch on WhatsApp to keep you updated on my whereabouts and what to expect. I'll have the exact coordinate pin ready for you so you know precisely where to guide your partner for the moment. On the ground, I'll be positioned discreetly, posing as a tourist, staying to the side, keeping well out of the frame until the moment happens.
The goal is for everything to look and feel completely natural. Your partner should have no reason to notice anything out of the ordinary until you're ready for them to.
