A Quiet Proposal Away from Kyoto’s Crowds
When people think of Kyoto, the first things that usually come to mind are red gates, traditional shrines, and temples. As the former capital of Japan, it’s known as the cultural and historical heart of the country. But beyond these well-known spots, there are still places that feel a bit more quiet and hidden.
One of these is Amanohashidate, also known as the “Bridge in Heaven.” It’s a pine covered sandbar that stretches across Miyazu Bay in northern Kyoto. It takes around two to three hours to reach by train or bus, but it feels completely different from the usual Kyoto experience once you get there.
This was the location Henry had in mind when he reached out to me about proposing to Michelle. It was their first time visiting Japan, and he already had a clear vision of where he wanted the moment to happen.
Since he was set on the location, I helped him plan everything around it, mainly the logistics and timing. His initial idea was to take the first train from Kyoto Station at around 9:00 a.m., arriving close to 11:00 a.m.
I suggested going later in the day instead. We aimed for around 4:30 p.m. to catch the softer light leading into sunset, which was around 6:15 p.m. at the time. It also helped us avoid the peak cherry blossom crowds.
My associate, Alejandra Acosta, photographed the proposal. The setting turned out exactly how we hoped. It was quiet, scenic, and far from the busy parts of the city, giving them space to really take in the moment. It felt simple in the best way, just the two of them with a beautiful view.
After the proposal, they spent some time taking more photos around the area. The results turned out beautifully, and it was really nice to see Henry’s vision come together the way he imagined.
If you are planning a proposal in Japan and want something a little different, I’d be happy to help. From choosing the right location to planning the details, let’s create something that feels like you.
