Before You Head to Hakone: Here’s What You Need to Know

Hakone is one of the most requested locations for proposals and engagement sessions, and it’s easy to see why. The lake, the mountains, the torii gates, and the old forest all sit within a short drive of each other. It also comes with a few details that are worth knowing before you arrive.

Why Hakone works so well

Hakone feels like a different world from central Tokyo. The air is cooler, the setting is quiet in the early morning, and the landscape changes quickly as you move between spots.

A few places come up again and again in our sessions:

Hakone Shrine and the torii gate on Lake Ashi

The gate rises from the water with the mountains behind it. The shrine is also known for en-musubi, the forming of bonds between people, which is why so many couples choose it.

The bridge, temple area, and old forest

The 800-year-old trees give photos a completely different texture from anything in the city.

Onshi Hakone Park

It sits on a hillside above Lake Ashi, with garden paths, open grounds, and lake views with the torii gates and the mountain in the background. Plus, autumn photoshoots look so very nice here!

Timing and transportation tips

The most important thing I tell my clients about Hakone is to start early. Hakone is a popular day-trip destination from Tokyo, and the first wave of visitors tends to arrive in the late morning.

Like in summer, the torii gate draws crowds early, so a start between 6:00 and 6:30 AM gives you the place almost to yourselves, along with cooler weather.

Hakone Shrine is traditionally associated with 縁結び (en-musubi)

If you're coming from Tokyo, a 6:30 AM arrival means leaving Tokyo around 5:00 AM. And if you'd like to visit Onshi Hakone Park, an 11:00 AM start would work well. It gets ahead of the busiest period, and by then the morning light has settled into something warm and directional.

At the end of an early session, I’ve often seen the first tourists arriving just as we finish. That’s the sign we used the morning right.

For transportation to an early-morning session, a car is the most practical option. Please ask your hotel to book a cab for you, and don’t rely on Uber.

Many of my previous clients had their Uber canceled at the last minute, even after booking it in advance. For a normal day out, that’s an inconvenience you can ask the hotel about the day before. Arranging the cab the night before means no scrambling on the morning of your shoot, so confirm the pickup time with the front desk, especially for departures before sunrise.

Plan the return, too. Ask the hotel about getting back after the session, so you aren’t stuck waiting. And keep me posted; if anything changes, send me a message on WhatsApp right away. Small details like this make a big difference when you’re trying to keep a surprise intact until the very last moment.

What a Hakone session can look like

On a typical morning, we start at one of the main spots, such as the torii gate, then move across the bridge, through the temple area, and into the forest, and finish near the lake once the light has warmed up. The mix of open water, old trees, and quiet paths gives the gallery a lot of range, even though the whole session takes place in a single area.
